Summer Camp San Juan Raya Workshop

During our July 2026 visit to San Juan Raya, we carried out a series of educational activities for children and families from the community. The goal was to bring paleontology, the museum, and the natural history of the region closer to the next generation.

Section 1

On the first day, around 15 children participated, accompanied by approximately 10 parents. Hudson gave a presentation on Deep Time, explaining the enormous scale of the last 150 million years in a clear and visual way. To support the explanation, we used a 100-meter string to physically represent the passage of time from the Cretaceous period (150 to 66 million years ago) to the present.

Section 2

On the second day, we gave a talk about fossils and the process of fossilization. As a hands-on activity, the children made plaster impressions of their hands, inspired by the dinosaur footprints that are part of San Juan Raya’s paleontological heritage. Although the plaster dried faster than expected, the children were able to create clear hand impressions and experience the idea of leaving a trace for posterity.
